How to install native PICO 8 on muOS

Step 1: Get the Right Files

  1. Buy Pico-8: Head over to Lexaloffle Games and purchase the Raspberry Pi version (this is the one you need for handhelds).
  2. Download the Splore File: Grab this ready-to-go Splore.p8 file to easily browse games on your device.

Step 2: Move Files to Your SD Card

  • The BIOS: Unzip your Pico-8 download and place the contents inside muOS > BIOS > pico8.

⚠️ Note: You must manually create the pico8 folder inside your BIOS directory and name it exactly like that.

  • The ROM: Place the downloaded Splore.p8 file into your Pico-8 ROMs folder. (Remember, muOS lets you create and name your own ROM folders, so just put it where you keep your Pico-8 games!)

Step 3: Configure and Launch

  1. Pop your SD card back into TF1 (or TF2 if you use a dual-card setup) and power on your device.
  2. Make sure you are connected to Wi-Fi.
  3. Navigate to your Pico-8 games folder. Highlight the Splore file, then press SELECT > ASSIGN CORE > PICO-8 > PICO-8 (EXTERNAL).
  4. Go back, press A on the Splore file, and watch the magic happen!

🛠️ Troubleshooting & Quick Tips

  • It didn’t work? Double-check three things: you bought the Raspberry Pi version, your BIOS folder is named exactly pico8, and the Splore.p8 file is actually in your ROMs folder.
  • How to Exit: To close out of Pico-8 and return to muOS, just press SELECT + START.

Happy gaming!
