Starting in 2028, all PlayStation games will be available only as downloads

Sony will discontinue production of physical games for all new PlayStation consoles starting in January 2028. From that date on, new games will be available exclusively in digital format—either through the PlayStation Store or from retailers in digital form (e.g., download codes).

According to Sid Shuman (Senior Director, Sony Interactive Entertainment Content Communications), this move is in response to changing consumer trends:

“Consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry continue to shift away from physical discs to digital”

The general preference for digital media significantly outweighs that for physical discs. Sony wants to align itself more closely with current user habits.

We’ll continue to prioritize our resources to drive innovation in how players can access games and provide choices as to where players prefer to purchase new games, whether that’s at retailers or PlayStation Store. We remain committed to delivering a world-class gaming experience to our fans and we thank you for your continued support.

Reading Between the Lines

From my analytical perspective, the following nuances can be discerned:

The “freedom of choice” statement

“choices as to where players prefer to purchase new games, whether that’s at retailers or PlayStation Store”

Ironically, the end of disc production is actually eliminating one option. While it remains theoretically possible to purchase download codes from retailers, the following changes occur:

  • The guarantee associated with physical goods is lost (no longer own a tangible product)
  • Price competition from used discs disappears
  • Collectible value is lost

The statement therefore suggests a state of choice, whereas in reality, the selection is becoming more limited.

Innovation Focus on Platform Control

“drive innovation in how players can access games”

This wording is intentionally kept open-ended. Possible directions could include:

    • Cloud gaming enhancements
    • Subscription-based models (PlayStation Plus Catalog)
    • Even greater integration of the digital store

Ultimately, this consolidates control more firmly within Sony itself, as physical distribution is less dependent on the manufacturer’s infrastructure.
